Lançado em 19 de março, com apoio da Ourofino Agrociência, o livro Bioenergy from Sugarcane apresenta ao mundo o potencial sustentável do setor sucroenergético brasileiro, com gráficos de produção e análises de mercado. Organizada pelo professor de agronegócio da Universidade de São Paulo (USP) e da Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV), Marcos Fava Neves, em parceria com o superintendente da Associação dos Fornecedores de Cana de Guariba (Socicana) e conselheiro da Bonsucro, Rafael Bordonal Kalani, a obra está disponível gratuitamente para download na internet, em sites como da Ourofino Agrociência, Socicana, União da Indústria de Cana-de-Açúcar (UNICA) e do Doutor Agro. Trata-se de uma coletânea de artigos científicos publicados pelos autores em revistas especializadas internacionais nos últimos 25 anos.
Nesta entrevista, Marcos Fava Neves, que assina, também, o livro Food and Agribusiness in 2030, fala sobre a motivação do livro, a relevância do Brasil e da Copersucar no setor e as tendências do mercado.
O que motivou esse livro?
É um antigo sonho nosso, de compilar em uma única obra os artigos mais relevantes sobre o setor de cana-de-açúcar que publicamos em revistas internacionais nos últimos 25 anos e colocá-la à disposição do público gratuitamente. O trabalho foi selecionar o material e atualizar os dados. É um livro que explora os agentes, as tendências, dá os grandes números, explica o funcionamento da cadeia, enfim, apresenta o setor de cana, principalmente para a comunidade internacional que queira entender mais sobre a bioenergia vinda da cana e a contribuição do setor sucroenergético brasileiro.
Por que foi escrito em inglês? Será lançado em português?
Foi escrito em inglês porque os textos originais já estavam em inglês e porque visou, especificamente, o público internacional. Não terá versão em português porque o conteúdo está bem tratado em outras publicações nacionais, que podem ser encontradas em diversos sites, como no da UNICA e no meu, o Doutor Agro.
O setor sucroenergético é apresentado como importante para o Brasil desde a sua colonização. Qual o papel do país em relação à energia?
O livro trabalha bem essa questão do Brasil como líder mundial em energias renováveis. Hoje, os Estados Unidos são o maior produtor de etanol, mas, proporcionalmente, nós somos o país que mais utiliza o biocombustível no mundo. Temos muita tradição, não só etanol, mas biodiesel, vindo de diversas fontes. Na área ambiental, o Brasil é potência. Tem o problema do desmatamento ilegal, que precisa ser combatido, mas os indicadores brasileiros são excelentes na questão de emissão per capita de carbono, território preservado, uso de biocombustíveis, tecnologias limpas. E o livro descreve esse papel fundamental da cana-de-açúcar na sustentabilidade mundial, mostra que é uma solução para a questão climática mundial.
Esse setor é prioritário como gerador de energia?
Absolutamente prioritário! Entrega uma quantidade imensa do combustível, que é utilizado pelos veículos leves, entrega energia elétrica para a rede de forma renovável e limpa, e, agora, cresce o biogás gerado pelas usinas. É um setor prioritário na energia do Brasil e bastante complementar às fontes energéticas do país.
Quais os principais desafios do setor?
Um dos principais desafios para a cana-de-açúcar, atualmente, é melhorar a entrega de produtos por hectare. Observamos grandes ganhos de produtividade de soja, milho e algodão, enquanto a cana, de certa maneira, andou de lado na última década. Precisamos liberar áreas de cana-de-açúcar para outras culturas e o principal desafio, na minha opinião, não é tanto industrial nem na distribuição, porque somos ótimos na logística, mas é na produtividade agrícola. É aí que precisamos crescer bastante, para poder entregar cada vez mais um combustível economicamente viável para o país.
Como o setor contribuiu para o desenvolvimento dos municípios?
O livro aborda, também, a importância das usinas para o desenvolvimento econômico, social e ambiental dos municípios. É um ponto forte, mostrando casos de sucesso, antes e depois da chegada das usinas. Medimos tudo isso. Tem uma pegada muito social, também, do benefício da cana em gerar oportunidades de empregos diretos e indiretos, com o crescimento do número de empresas locais e das movimentações econômicas. Com a questão econômica e social, o setor contribuiu, e muito, para a interiorização do desenvolvimento do Brasil.
O livro dedica um capítulo à Copersucar. Por quê?
A Copersucar é uma das organizações mais importantes e relevantes do mundo na história da produção e comercialização de açúcar. É um caso exemplar no mundo, de organização conjunta de empresas para ganhos de eficiência comercial, escala, logística, racionalidade. Tem um modelo único, que integra os participantes da cadeia, respeitando a individualidade das unidades, o que dá flexibilidade, mas sem abrir mão dos valores e princípios da companhia nem perder de vista o objetivo comum. Além de investir constantemente em inovação.
Quais as tendências para o açúcar e o etanol?
Os números apontam que o Brasil deve produzir algo ao redor de 50 bilhões de litros de etanol até 2030, dentro das metas do RenovaBio, a política nacional de descarbonização, que objetiva ampliar a participação dos biocombustíveis na matriz de transportes brasileira. Desse volume, o etanol de milho deve ficar com 8/9 bilhões e o etanol vindo da cana deve saltar dos 30/32 bilhões para 4041 bilhões de litros. Então, vamos precisar de um crescimento na produção de cana para cumprir essa estimativa. No caso do açúcar, as previsões do mercado mundial continuam em crescimento, mas a uma taxa menor na próxima década, comparada com a atual, em virtude de muitos mercados diminuírem o consumo de açúcar, principalmente os mais ricos. Onde cresce é na Ásia, por causa da urbanização da população, que tem mais acesso a produtos que contêm açúcar, como refrigerantes e doces.
O Brasil conseguirá produzir o etanol esperado até 2030?
O Brasil vem vindo bem nos objetivos colocados pela Conferência das Nações Unidas sobre as Mudanças Climáticas de 2015, a COP-21, com o RenovaBio e a preocupação das empresas com a sustentabilidade. Tenho confiança que o setor de açúcar-energia brasileira tem, sim, condições para produzir 54 bilhões de litros de etanol em 2030, contribuindo para o país cumprir o compromisso assumido.
Qual a expectativa do mercado para o pós-pandemia de Covid-19?
Creio que são boas, porque a economia mundial deve crescer entre 4 e 5% e o Brasil pós-pandemia pode acelerar em torno de 3,5%, puxando o mercado de açúcar e de etanol, o que favorece o setor. O petróleo subiu em plena pandemia, o que não esperávamos, arrastando para cima, também, os preços desses produtos. E as usinas foram ágeis, inclusive a Copersucar, garantindo a venda de parte das safras no mercado futuro a um preço interessante na conversão para o real. Isso tudo me leva a crer que o setor de cana-de-açúcar, se não tivermos nenhuma grade tragédia na macroeconomia brasileira, deve ter uns bons anos pela frente, com rentabilidades melhores.

Copersucar treats Personal Data, understood to be data that enable an individual to be identified or to become identifiable (“Personal Data” or “Data”).
Copersucar collects and treats Data on its various interfaces in the normal course of its business.
Thus, it collects the Personal Data of employees, customer representatives, partners, service providers, and suppliers etc. The list of data collected may include: Identification data, contact data, browsing data (cookies, IP addresses), geolocalization, devices, health data (this is considered sensitive Personal Data), biometric data and other data required from time to time for undertaking transactions under Copersucar’s responsibility.
